Futuristic Nicotine Delivery Systems Ariel (BAT, 1960s- not pictured) Illustration from patent filed on behalf of BAT for novel device which burned tobacco around a central core of nicotine- charged material. The consumer mostly inhaled the nicotine rich aerosol and little of the tobacco smoke. recently uncovered dcuments from Brown & Williamson reveal the inventor, Sir Charles Ellis, a senior official with BAT, to have been convinced of the addictive nature of nicotine at the time this device was under initial development. Premier shown here, introduced in 1988- features a charcoal fuel element heated beads in aluminum cyclinder to genreate aerosol of nicotine, water, glycerine, carbon dioxide with small amounts of many other materials. Proximal portions are cooling chambers, not filters, despite their designation as filters in the diagram from RJR. Public health groups petitioned FDA to regulate Premier as a drug but RJR withdrew it from the market, Premier is still made and given to requesting empoyers at RJR for their personnal use.
